Lead-acid batteries – where to start?!

Most of us have experienced that moment when a lead-acid battery has let us down and the car, Ute, or boat engine wouldn’t turn over. (Usually, this event is accompanied by a torrential downpour and driving winds.)

A bit like lightbulbs, we don’t take too much notice of batteries til they don’t work. But, like lightbulbs, batteries have a limited life.

For businesses which deal with multiple batteries on a daily basis, the nuisance goes much farther than a vehicle not starting – and it’s also harder to fix.

The problem is that, when batteries age, they can corrode and leak both sulphuric acid and lead. Even shifting them, without taking appropriate precautions, can result in splashes from battery acid.

Because of the significant risk to soil and the wider environment, batteries are not something we want in New Zealand landfills.

There’s a better, safer way.

Instead of leaving batteries rusting in a shed, or on a pallet, out the back, keep them safe and secure in a Hazero 4 Drum Hardcover containment unit ready for collection or disposal.

There are numerous organisations and companies who will take care of end-of-life batteries for you. Some offer collection, also rebates, points, rewards, or even market scrap rates. A quick Google search will help you find the best or nearest solution or visit:

Storing (new) batteries safely

Batteries are sensitive to heat and storing new batteries, especially longer term, is quite technical. Not only that, but they take up a fair bit of room. (Not everyone has that kind of space.)

The Hazero 4 Drum Hardcover containment unit offers a great solution.

Quick and easy to access, and lockable to guard against theft, these give you the flexibility you need when space is at a premium.

Because they’re relocatable, when empty, they’re a genuine long-term asset for your evolving business. (And speedy to assemble too!)

A generous sump provides a no-worries environmental safeguard.

Always remember to place out of direct sunlight, only store fully charged batteries. Batteries lose their charge over time, so review charge levels regularly.

Fun battery fact: “Recharging your batteries” has become associated with our need for rest and recreation, or work/life balance. This first person thought to have used the phrase was war-time leader and statesman Winston Churchill.
