Hazero Lithium-ion Safety Cabinets bring home award

Reuben Deck, head of Business Development and Product Innovation at Hazero, recently accepted the Fire NZ 2025 Carboline | Altex Coatings Innovative Product Award.

The award was presented by Garth Moran on behalf of the sponsors, at a gala dinner at Fire NZ Conference in Wellington. It recognised Hazero’s groundbreaking Lithium-ion Battery Safety Cabinet range. Designed and fabricated in New Zealand the cabinets help protect homes and businesses from the impact of lithium-ion battery fires.

Lithium-ion battery fires are a growing concern in New Zealand. According to Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ), the number of fires caused by lithium-ion batteries has more than doubled since 2020, with 120 incidents reported in
2024 and 42 already this year. Globally, lithium-ion fires have resulted in fatalities, and significant property damage.

Lithium-ion batteries, used in everything from mobile phones to e-vehicles, are prone to something known as “thermal runaway”. This is where even one faulty cell, or an internal reaction, can rapidly spread. That leads to dramatically increased temperatures  and, potentially, causes the battery to explode.

Reuben says the award was a welcome recognition of the industry leading protection that this new range provides. He said Hazero has had a longtime passion for finding solutions to protect Kiwis from harm and hazards. “It’s what we do.”
